Deep-eutectic solvents (DESs) have\u00a0recently\u00a0been described\u00a0as a new class of ILs. DESs are obtained by\u00a0complexion of quaternary ammonium salts with hydrogenbond\u00a0donors.\u00a0 The charge delocalization occurring through\u00a0hydrogen bonding between the halide anion with the hydrogen-donor moiety is responsible for the decrease in the\u00a0freezing point of the mixture relative to the melting points of\u00a0the individual components.<\/p>\n

DESs share many characteristics\u00a0of conventional ILs (e.g. they are nonreactive with water,\u00a0nonvolatile, and biodegradable), but their low cost makes\u00a0them particularly desirable (more so than conventional ILs) for\u00a0large-scale synthetic applications.<\/p>\n
