In this Lab we perform studies on the elastic and optical properties of different kinds of materials through the analysis of their scattered light (Brillouin Spectroscopy\u00a0<\/span>\u2013>>BS<\/span>).\u00a0The frequency shift of the scattered light is proportional to the propagation velocity of an acoustic wave in the material.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

We study transparent and opaque materials both in bulk or film shaped.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the first case we focus our studies on the evolution of the elastic and optical properties with temperature and pressure which are connected to structural changes.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the second case our research activities are centred on Surface Acoustic Waves (SAW) and their relationship with the structure of the material. (Brillouin Spectroscopy and SAW\u00a0<\/span>\u2013>>\u00a0<\/span><\/a>BS2<\/span>)<\/span><\/p>\n

In order to perform spectroscopic studies the lab counts on a 6 pass in tandem\u00a0<\/span>\u2013>><\/span><\/a>JRS-Scientific Instruments<\/span><\/a>\u00a0spectrometer and on a\u00a0<\/span>\u2013>><\/span><\/a>Spectra-Physics<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Excelsion DPSS Laser with external Etalon.<\/span>

For the\u00a0MicroBrillouin<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0technique we use an\u00a0Olympus BX51<\/strong>\u00a0microscope with 5X, 10X, 20X and 50X objectives and a\u00a0M\u00e4rzh\u00e4user<\/strong>\u00a0motorized table.

Temperature variation is achieved using a He cryostat \u201cOptistat\u201d and a temperature controller\u00a0 ITC-503, both of\u00a0<\/span>\u2013>><\/span><\/a>Oxford Instruments<\/span><\/a>. In this way we are able to perform measurements between room temperature and 5K.<\/span><\/p>\n

High temperatures, up to 500\u00baC, are obtained with a \u201cHomemade\u201d small optical thermostat and the pressure experiments are performed in a Diamond Anvil Cell (DAC) .<\/span><\/p>\n

The angular characterisation (sagittal and azimuthal) is assured by a motorised rotating system, allowing a high accuracy in angular positioning .<\/span><\/p>\n
