Since then perovskite-type oxides have played vital roles in the field of energy conversion and storage. In this review, a brief overview is given on the structure, defect chemistry, and transport properties of perovskite oxides, especially the mixed-valent materials with mixed electronic and ionic conductivities. The recent advances of perovskite oxides applications in the oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, electrochemical water splitting reaction, metal\u2013air batteries, solid-state batteries, oxygen separation membranes, and solid oxide fuel cells are highlighted. Moreover, some novel design strategies for optimizing performance, like interface engineering, defect engineering, strain modulation are discussed as well. Finally, a per- spective is given on how to design high-performance perovskite oxide based materials for energy conversion and storage applications as well as the chal- lenges involved in this task.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Perovskite-related materials can be dated back to 1839, when the mineral materials with perovskite structure were first studied. Perovskite oxides are a kind of important functional materials with excellent physical and chemical properties, which are widely utilized in ferroelectric, piezoelectric, dielectric, energy conversi\u00f3n and storage, and so on. As introduced in his autobioraphy book \u201cWitness to Grace,\u201d Professor John B. Goodenough has started his research on perovskite-type oxides more than 60 years ago. Besides the important contribution to lithium-ion bat- teries, Professor Goodenough\u2019s research has been widely involved in perovskite oxide materials for energy conversion and storage applications. So far, perovskite- type oxides have played vital roles in the field of energy conversion and storage. In this review, we give a brief summary of the history, defect chemistry, structure and transport properties of perovskite oxides, especially the mixed-valent materials with mixed electronic and ionic conductivities. We highlighted the recent advances of perovskite oxides applications in oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduc- tion reaction (ORR), electrochemical water splitting, metal\u2013air batteries, solid-state batteries, oxygen separation membrane, and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Herein, we aim to give a tutorial review on the structure, properties, optimizing strategies and applications of perovskite oxides in energy conversion and storage, especially the recent progresses.
