New properties can also arise if one focuses on dimensionality rather than the material itself. This is the case for various types of quantum dots, including novel devices in nanowires, nanotubes and Silicon FinFETs doped with isolated donors. Interfaces between oxides with different properties are also being largely explored. Finally, a great deal of new concepts and properties can be obtained by combining the properties of electrons in the normal and superconducting state. Research that exploits this idea and focuses on so-called hybrid nanostructures holds promise for great development in the next few years.

During the last few years, the study of electronic properties in solid state systems is experiencing profound changes owing to the discovery of novel materials.
