María Luisa Ferrer is a tenured scientist at the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid (ICMM), of the Spanish Research Council (CSIC). After a MS degree in polymer science (1992), she completed her PhD in chemistry (biophysics) at the University Autonoma of Madrid (1995).

In 1996, she jointed the University of Patras (Greece) as a post-doc researcher to work on hybrid sol-gel materials with Prof. P. Lianos. From 1997 to 1998, she was working on supercooled liquids with Prof. D. Kivelson at UCLA (USA). In 1999 and till 2000, she got a teaching appointment at the University Miguel Hernández (Spain). Since 2000, she has been at the ICMM-CSIC, working on the design and preparation of bioinspired materials for applications in biotechnology and biomedicine.

Her current research interests cover the preparation of hierarchical bio-hybrid materials and 3D scaffolds for fuel cell applications and for tissue engineering. She has co-authored over 40 articles.
