Berta Gómez-Lor received her B.S. in Organic Chemistry in 1988 and obtained her Ph.D. degree in 1992 from the University of Santiago de Compostela under the supervision of Prof. Enrique Guitián Rivera.
After postdoctoral research at Sandoz Pharma, Basel, with Dr. Gideon Shapiro (1993–1994), and at the University of Illinois with Prof. Scott E. Denmark (1994), she joined the group of Prof. A. M. Echavarren at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). During this period, she gained extensive experience in synthetic organic chemistry and initiated her research in functional organic materials, including the development of fullerene-based systems that resulted in a publication in Nature.
In 2001, she obtained a Ramón y Cajal position at the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid (ICMM-CSIC). She became Tenured Scientist at CSIC in 2003 and was promoted to Senior Scientist in 2009.
Her research focuses on the synthesis and study of functional organic and supramolecular materials for applications in organic electronics, photonics, photocatalysis, and sensing. In particular, her work explores conjugated systems for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic photovoltaics (OPVs), and organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs), with special interest in the relationship between molecular organization and optoelectronic properties.
Over the years, she has established numerous national and international collaborations in the fields of organic electronics and functional materials, including a visiting professorship at Technische Universität Dresden in 2018.
