I graduated and then obtained a PhD in optical properties of semiconductors in the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. After a postdoctoral stay at University of Oxford and a teaching stint at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid I entered the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) as a tenured scientist.
Our group has accumulated over twenty years’ experience in the field of selfassembled photonic materials. Several patents and numerous articles have been published in journals including Nature, Nature Photonics, Nature Physics, Nature Chemistry, Physical Review Letters, Advanced Materials, Nano Letters etc. This vast experience is also reflected by over eight thousand citations and a large number of invited talks, seminars and ordinary contributions to conferences.

My experience covers also the organisation of international conferences and workshops.

Apart from many postgraduate students and postdocs, I have supervised over ten PhD theses (completed) with students that, predominantly, have stayed in research in national and foreign institutions. I participate in university postgraduate programmes and have organised international schools.

I have managed science through contracts, research projects and the coordination of national and regional programmes and held high institutional responsibilities such as the coordination of the Materials Science Area of CSIC, I belonged to the CSIC Scientific Advisory Board. Currently I serve in the ICMM Strategic Committee.

I regularly act as evaluator for several international funding agencies and as a reviewer for journals of NPG, Science, APS, WVCH etc.

I was co-editor of EPL (former Europhysics Letters) and belong to the editorial board of Advanced Materials, Advanced Optical Materials, Small and Crystals
