PhD STUDENT POSITION IN THE NANOSCIENCE AND NANOMEDICINE FIELD

Predoctoral position

Title: Interfacial liquids on solid surfaces
Requirements: Graduate in Physics or Chemistry with an average grade score above 7,3. Enrolled in a master program from a Spanish or European Union university.
Description: The goal is to develop a fast and high-spatial resolution three-dimensional AFM to provide a molecular-scale understanding of how a liquid, in particular, aqueous solutions interact with a solid surface. High-spatial resolution 3D images of solid-liquid interactions and processes will address and eventually solve fundamental questions on the structure and interactions of a liquid with 2D materials, polymers and proteins. The instrument tool will be applied to address several problems with implications in energy storage and sustainability.

Predoctoral position

Title: Artificial intelligence, force microscopy and mechanobiology
Requirements: Graduate in Physics, Biotechnology, Engineering (mechanical, electrical or biomedical) with an average grade score above 7,3. Enrolled in a master program from a Spanish or European Union university.
Description:
The objective is to develop artificial intelligence methods to facilitate the measurement and processing of the nanomechanical properties of cells and tissues obtained from AFM images. Those codes will aim to reduce processing time while handling a large number of experimental data, and without losing the quantitative accuracy demanded by cell biology applications. The ultimate goal is to markers of disease based on nanomechanical phenotypes at single cell or tissue levels.

Area or Group of research:

Advanced force microscopy and nanolithography, Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid (CSIC)

Description of Group/Project:

We offer several graduate student positions for developing advance force microscopy methods. We are seeking applicants who are interested in the study of soft matter-liquid interfaces and mechanical properties at the nanoscale. The aim of the offered positions is both the development of theoretical methods and the experimental application. The successful applicant will join the research group of Prof. Ricardo Garcia, a worldwide, awarded expert in the Atomic Force Microscopy field. An international team made by young, vibrant and knowledgeable scientists that work in an environment with frequent interactions with physicists, chemists and biologists, which publish articles in high-impact factor journals and give talks in international conferences (http://www.icmm.csic.es/forcetool/).

Qualifications, Experience and Skills Required:

Degree in Physics, Biochemistry or related area. Candidates with experience in AFM operation and/or master-project research work will be positively evaluated. Good knowledge of English is required.

How to apply:

Interested candidates please send a  CV along with a brief letter of motivation (150 words) to Ricardo Garcia, Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid, CSIC, Spain (victor.gisbert@csic.es).
