Considered as a model in surface science studies of transition metal oxides, the (110) face of TiO2 has been widely investigated. As a powerful tool for surface studies, scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) has been used to extract information on the phenomena and reactions taking place at this surface. However, different types of atomic-resolved STM images have been reported in the literature for the clean surface of TiO2(110)-(1×1). In this study, combining experimental work with theoretical simulations, it is exhibited the influence of the tip condition when imaging this surface by STM. As an example the following figure shows four different STM images obtained for the same surface, the (1×1) termination of TiO2(110).
