Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid, CSIC

Welcome to the Materials for Medicine and Biotechnology Group (MaMBIO) at the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid.

The MaMBIO Group, integrated in the Energy, Environment and Health Department and member of the Materials for Health Research topic, is devoted to search for new perspectives on the synthesis, structure and function of materials. Its main research topics focus on:
(1) The preparation of nanomaterials, primarily nanoparticles
(2) The modification of nanomaterials by doping or coating
(3) The preparation of colloidal suspensions
(4) Their characterization
All topics are closely connected to provide new insights into the properties of nanomaterials and their application in fields such as bioimaging, nanomedicine, catalysis, magnetic devices and sensors.

In 2017, a new research topic leaded by Dr. ConcepciĆ³n Serrano and focused on the design and development of 3D biomaterials for biomedical applications including tissue engineering was incorporated to the main research activities of the group. In 2022, Dr Ana Espinosa joined the group, with new research targets on photo- and X-ray-activated nanoparticles for biomedical purposes.

The MaMBIO Group consists of two subgroups: the Laboratory of Colloidal Nanocrystals and Chemistry (headed by Professor M. Puerto Morales) and the Laboratory of Advanced Materials for Life (headed by Dr M. ConcepciĆ³n Serrano).
