ABSTRACT: Spintronics is an emerging area of electronic nanotechnology which explores the spin instead of the electron degree of freedom. It has been recognized as very promising alternative for ultra-low-power electronics due to the low intrinsic energy needed to manipulate nanomagnets. Recent research unveiled the potential of spintronics for ultralow power and reconfigurable non-volatile electronics, low energy consumption sensors, non-conventional computing and artificial intelligence devices.Spain has important traditions in magnetic materials and in nanomagnetism. However, spintronics in Spain is doing its first steps. At the same time in recent year in Spain the number of researchers working on spintronics has increased. Due to an expected increase of the spintronic market and investment in spintronics in the world, we anticipate the necessity to boost the spintronic research in Spain. The SpinRed2 network is comprised of 14 nodes from 22 research institutes and Universities from Madrid, Barcelona, Zaragoza, San Sebastian,Bilbao, Valencia and Sevilla. It aims at the promotion and consolidation of the development of spintronics and collaboration between groups working on this issue in Spain. The network will pursue synergetic efforts of the community with the aim to explore different alternatives of spintronic research for energy efficient spin-based devices, such as spin logic, spin memories, non-conventional computing or spintronic-based sensors. SpinRed2 will be organised in 4 working groups: (i) Metallic spintronics,(ii) Insulator spintronics and magnonics, (iii) Dynamics of spin textures and (iv) Organic, 2D andquantum spintronics and two transverse platforms: (a) Materials and device preparation and (b) Multi-scale modelling. We will re-enforce and open new lines of research aiming at exploring novel spintronic concepts such as spin-orbit torques, spincaloritronics, magnonics, topological spintronics, antiferromagnetic spintronics, quantum spintronics, ultrafast magnetization dynamics etc. The network will serve for optimizing the use of advanced techniques of manufacturing, characterization and modeling, available in the different groups of the SpinRed2 nodes. The SpinRed2 networks also aims at expanding and improving the visibility of Spanish research in spintronics in the European Union. We hope to increase the active participation of the SpinRed2 groups in the European Association Spintronic Factory and to take advantage of research funding initiatives and networking that arise at the European level. The network will also actively work at promoting the awareness among different agents (politicians, general publics, financing agents) about the problem of energy consumption of ICT, the need to conduct research inthis direction and the existing spintronics solutions.
